Fix Brother 5860CN "Change Unable 30" Error

· 2 min read

The "Change Unable 30" error on a Brother 5860CN printer is typically caused by the encoder strip - a thin, semi-transparent plastic strip inside the printer - falling out of its guide track. The encoder strip is used by the printer to track the position of the print head. When it slips out of place, the printer cannot determine the head position and displays this error.

How to fix it

This repair requires partially disassembling the printer to access the encoder strip:

  1. Lift the scanner cover and remove the two plastic panels covering the internal wiring. Note the position of any cables before disconnecting them, then remove the top scanner section entirely.
  2. Remove the screws from the top plastic shell. There are typically two screws at the back and four at the front. Two plastic tabs at the front also need to be carefully bent aside before the top shell can be lifted off.
  3. Locate the encoder strip (a thin, clear plastic strip that runs horizontally across the printer). Gently place it back into its plastic guide channel.
  4. Reassemble the printer in reverse order: replace the top shell, reattach the screws, reconnect the cables, and replace the plastic panels.
  5. Restart the printer and verify the error has cleared.

Tips

  • Handle the encoder strip carefully. Do not touch the strip with your fingers, as oils from your skin can cause the printer to misread the position markings. If the strip is dirty, clean it gently with a lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol.
  • Take photos during disassembly so you have a reference for reassembly, especially for cable positions.
  • If the encoder strip is damaged or torn, it will need to be replaced. Contact Brother support or an authorised service provider for a replacement part.
