How to re enable gadgets in Windows 7

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click Program and Features
  4. Click Uninstall a Program
  5. This will now launch the installed programs list
  6. Click “Turn Windows Features On and Off” on the left hand menu
  7. Check Windows Gadget Platform
  8. Press Ok
  9. Your PC will restart and gadgets will be re-enabled.

Note: Although originally enabled in Windows 7 – Microsoft had deactivated the gadgets due to unstable/malicious code that allowed unsavoury individuals remote access to the PC. If re-enabled make you are running the latest Windows Update and the Windows Firewall service is enabled.

This problem is generally caused by corrupted/damaged DNS Cache. Follow the instructions below to repair.


  1. Click Start
  2. Click All Programs/Programs
  3. Click Accessories
  4. Right click Command Prompt select Run as Administrator
  5. Type in: ipconfig /flushdns
  6. Press Enter
  7. Restart your computer and attempt Windows Update.


If the above doesn’t work then you can bypass the problem by assigning your own DNS server , such as Google DNS.

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click Network/Network & Sharing Center
  4. Click Change Adapter Settings (on the left hand side)
  5. Right click Local Area Connection (if you are using wired method of connecting – if not select Wireless Connection)
  6. Select Properties
  7. Click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
  8. Click Properties
  9. Select Use the following DNS server addresses
  10. Type in: and on the second line
  11. Click Ok
  12. You are now routing your computers DNS through google’s servers instead of the service offered by your Internet Service Provider. Depending on who and where you are – you might notice a slowdown in internet browsing or a speed up – this is normal.
  13. Restart your computer and attempt Windows Update.

  10. Click Start
  11. Click Run
  12. Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll > Press Ok
  13. Click Start
  14. Click Run
  15. Type: regsvr32 msxml3.dll > Press Ok
  16. Click Start
  17. Click Run
  18. Type: regsvr32 atl.dll > Press Ok
  19. Click Start
  20. Click Run
  21. Type: regsvr32 wucltui.dll > Press Ok
  22. Click Start
  23. Click Run
  24. Type: net.exe start wuauserv > Press Ok
  25. Attempt Windows Update again.

Enable Windows Automatic Updates

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click Security
  4. Click Windows Update
  5. Click Change Settings
  6. Click Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them” 
  7. Click Ok
